ELEMENTARY NUMber Theory

WHEN: March 4, 2025 - February 26, 2026

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 - 6:00 pm PST, except major holidays
  • All sessions are recorded and available for playback immediately after the class.

TEXTBOOKS AND PREREQUISITES

  • Introduction to Number Theory, by Matthew Crawford

  • Prerequisites: must have completed a course in prealgebra; interest in higher mathematics

TOPICS (not all may be covered)

  • Divisibility: the division algorithm, divisibility properties, divisibility rules
  • Prime numbers and prime factorization, factoring
  • Lcm's and gcd's, the Euclidean Algorithm
  • Bases of numeration
  • Modular arithmetic: properties, Fermat's Little Theorem, Euler's Theorem, Wilson's Theorem
  • Systems of linear congruences and the Chinese Remainder Theorem
  • Floor functions and Legendre's Formula
  • Special numbers
  • Diophantine equations
  • Number theoretic functions, Gauss's Formula, Mobius Inversion Formula

IMPORTANT

This class is ideal for any student interested in a career in mathematics/computer science/STEM. The class will be extremely helpful for students interested in participating in math competitions. Carefully selected problems from various math competitions and Olympiads from around the world will be discussed in class, and homework will be regularly given.
